For PPR plumbing, heat fusion is everything. A good joint means no leaks for decades; a bad one means endless headaches. In reality, most leaks trace back to sloppy fusion work, not fitting quality. Here's the standard process and common mistakes, all in one place.
1. How Heat Fusion Works
Heat PPR to around 260°C and it softens and gets tacky. Heat the pipe exterior and fitting interior at the same time, push them together, and once cooled they become one solid piece. The joint is as strong as the pipe itself-stronger than any glue.
2. The 5-Step Standard Process
1. Cut and clean: Use a dedicated pipe cutter for a square cut. Deburr, mark the insertion depth on the pipe, and wipe both the pipe and fitting socket clean.
2. Heat: Set the fusion tool to 260°C. Insert both pipe and fitting into the heating dies at the same time. Hold for the right duration (about 5s for 20mm, 8s for 32mm). Don't twist, don't force it.
3. Join: Pull them off the dies and push the pipe straight into the fitting until it hits your mark. Keep it coaxial-no twisting, no turning. Once it's in, don't move it.
4. Cool: Let it sit undisturbed for at least 30 seconds to cool naturally. Don't bend, pull, or splash cold water to rush it.
5. Inspect: Check the joint for a uniform bead around the perimeter. No dents, no misalignment-you're good.
3. 4 Most Common Mistakes
1. Wrong temperature: Some crank it past 280°C to save time. That burns and embrittles the pipe-looks fine at first, cracks later. Too low and it won't melt through, causing cold welding (incomplete fusion).
2. Guessing the heating time: Larger pipes need more time. Too short and the inside isn't soft; too long and material drips away, narrowing the joint and restricting flow.
3. Twisting while joining: This is the worst one. Twisting disrupts the molten layer and creates hidden gaps. It might pass a pressure test but will definitely leak after a year or two-and be a nightmare to trace.
4. Dirty dies / moving before cool: Burnt residue on the die head ruins fusion quality. Moving the pipe before it's cooled will crack the joint outright.
4. Testing & Selection Tips
• Pressure testing: Always do a hydrostatic test after installation. 1.5x working pressure, hold for 30 minutes. Pressure drop ≤0.05MPa means pass. For concealed piping, don't close the wall until it passes.
• Stick to one brand: Use the same brand for pipes and fittings in one system. Matching material formulas mean better fusion compatibility.
• Check threaded fitting construction: For metal-plastic hybrids like male thread tees, prioritize ones with anti-pullout barbs. The brass won't loosen even after long-term thermal cycling.
