In building hot and cold water systems, PPR pipes transport fluids, while fittings enable directional changes, flow division, and connections. Owners and purchasers often focus more on pipes than fittings, and incorrect selection is a common cause of leaks or insufficient flow. PPR pipe fittings have clear categories, with each type corresponding to a specific application scenario.

 

I. Elbows: Core Components for Pipe Direction Changes

Elbows are used to change the direction of water flow and are among the most widely used fittings. They are categorized into three types based on angle and connection type.

• 90° Elbow: Used for 90-degree turns (e.g., from wall to floor). Available in equal and reducing sizes to fit different pipe diameters.

• 45° Elbow: Used for slight directional changes or obstacle avoidance. It offers a smoother flow path and lower water resistance compared to forcibly bending the pipe.

• Threaded Elbow (Female/Male): Features embedded brass threads for connecting metal fixtures at corners without additional adapters.

 

II. Tees: Key Components for Flow Division

Tees are designed to split one water line into two, making them essential for branch connections and residential water distribution.

• Equal Tee: All three outlets have the same diameter, used for splitting a main line into branches of the same size. It is the most common type in home and commercial projects.

• Reducing Tee: The main and branch outlets have different diameters, used to split a larger pipe into a smaller branch. This reduces the need for separate reducers and minimizes leak risks.

• Threaded Tee: Equipped with brass threads, allowing flow division while directly connecting to metal equipment. Commonly used before water meters and valves.

 

III. Couplings: Connection and Repair for Straight Pipes

Couplings (also known as straight connectors or pipe sockets) are basic components for straight pipelines, used for extending lengths and repairs.

• Equal Coupling: Used to extend pipes of the same diameter when a single pipe length is insufficient.

• Reducing Coupling (Reducer): Used to connect pipes of different diameters in a straight line. Compared to using multiple fittings, a single reducing coupling offers lower flow resistance and fewer leak points.

• Repair Application: By cutting out the damaged section and connecting the two ends with a coupling, repair costs and time are minimized without replacing the entire pipe.

 

IV. Threaded Adapters: The Bridge Between Plastic and Metal

Threaded adapters are transition fittings between PPR pipes and metal equipment. One end is for heat fusion with PPR, and the other end has brass threads, available in female and male types.

• Female Threaded Adapter: Connects to male-threaded devices such as faucets and angle valves.

• Male Threaded Adapter: Connects to female-threaded devices such as valves and filters.

Structurally, they include threaded couplings, elbows, and tees, corresponding to straight, corner, and branch connections. It is recommended to choose products with natively matched threads to minimize the use of reducing bushes.

 

V. Core Principles for Selection and Matching

1. Select by function: Use elbows for direction changes, tees for branching, couplings for extensions, and threaded fittings for metal connections. Avoid forcing a single fitting type to serve multiple incompatible purposes.

2. Select pressure ratings based on working conditions: Use PN20 or higher for hot water systems. For threaded fittings, prefer those with anti-pull-out barb structures to prevent long-term leakage.

3. Use the same brand within a system: This ensures heat fusion compatibility. With proper selection and installation, PPR fittings can achieve a service life synchronized with the piping system itself.
